| My current oily skin foundation rotation! |
Do you have oily/combo skin like myself? Look no further, I've been experimenting with foundations quite a lot this past year (I blame it on the excess breakouts) and I now have found a good place with my foundations. Listed below are my top three recommendations. This post doesn't include my runner ups, meaning you'll be hearing more about this topic in the future! ;)
Quick Background:
A little over a year ago I used to have extremely dry skin. However for some reason during mid summer of 2012 my skin decided to change on me and it started getting oilier and oilier. Add in some breakouts and voila - I'm instantly taken to the oily skin category. I also found out that I had dehydrated skin. You can certainly have dehydrated skin with either oily or dry, just like how you can have sensitive skin no matter what skin type. However you have to know the underlying causes to your dehydration. To combat dehydration I try drinking plenty of water (which I often fail to do) and I also use a serum (I recommend Caudalie's Vinoperfect Serum - it helps treat dehydration, hyperpigmention, and uneven skin tone!). I recommend to look at what you need when researching on your foundation for oily skin:
1. Coverage. The usual saying is that the higher the coverage the more "cakey" it feels. Although this formula usually speaks the truth, there are plenty of high coverage foundations out there that you can either blend out for less coverage or give a second skin finish. But evaluate your skin and ask yourself... how much coverage do you need? Can you cover just those two pimples with a concealer or do you need help evening out skin tone and hyperpigmentation?
2. Wear. If you have oily skin, evaluate how oily in comparison to the foundations you are wearing now. Do you have reapply every 5 hours or so? Does your face get shiny in a matter of a few hours? If so, there are better options out in the market for you.
Now... on to my recommendations!
1. Laura Mercier Silk Creme Foundation + Rimmel's Stay Matte Pressed Powder
I love this combination. The Silk Creme Foundation by itself is great as well, but for extra long wear I add in the powder. This foundation gives second skin finish and is beautiful no matter how you apply - fingers, brush, Beautyblender, you name it! I used to not care so much about this foundation, but after wearing it for over 3 months I have grown to love with it. It has such a smooth blendable texture, and it makes you glow. Matte foundations usually have this dry powdery finish, but definitely not this one! It lasts all day on me (especially at the clinic where I am walking to and fro and sometimes adding in a sweat from all the manual therapy I have to do!) and because of the oil free formula, it has never broken me out. It has no SPF so it's great for taking pictures. Only downside is that it is a bit pricey being at $42. However, in my experience, it has been worth the price, and it has lasted me a while!
2. Givenchy Eclat Matissme
Not really looking into have such high coverage, but still need to control to oil and even out skin tone? Try the Eclat Mattisme. The foundation manages oil real well. It lasts quite a while and gives a natural almost "not there" feel with a slight powdery finish. I find that it's best to apply it with a damp sponge or your Beautyblender. You can skip adding the powder with this foundation. I find that it has quite the "regal-ish" smell that the Chanel Vitalumier has, but not as strong. It has an SPF of 20 so there's no need to add on an SPF (please tell me you wear SPF every day!!), but I haven't had much trouble with the foundation giving me the white cast in pictures. The biggest downside for this foundation is that it costs so much that it's almost NOT worth it ($53, anyone?). However if you have sensitive, mature skin, I highly recommend the Eclat Mattisme. It also comes with a pump that helps keep the foundation sanitary (something I wish ALL foundations had). I like that I can skip 3 steps when using this foundation (SPF, primer, and powder!). I love products that can save me time.
3. Revlon Colorstay Foundation for Oily/Combo Skin
All I can say is that this is the best drugstore option for you oily skin girls. And this stuff STAYS on skin. Every time I wear this foundation I make sure I cleanse well, and my Clarisonic is always dirty looking afterwards (ew!). It lasts all day, even on days when it was super hot outside and I had a lot of sweat. It has very good coverage, but I find it you have to work with it faster when applying and blending into the skin because it dries and sets quickly. I feel that I don't even have to put on concealer on my acne spots because this foundation covers really well. I've been wearing this more often lately because this stands up to the heat and my oily skin together. It's a fighter that's for sure! It has an SPF of 6, but honestly... what's that going to do?? I've seen this foundation retail somewhere between $8-12 depending on where you get it from. Only downside is that it's not oil free and although it hasn't broken me out, I've heard reports from other girls that it gave a reaction on their skin. Also if your skin isn't too oily this can feel quite drying on your skin and if not properly blended during application it can easily look cakey! I recommend using a dense brush for application.
